Indian Stock Market Turns Volatile as Oil Prices Surge; Nifty 23,000 in Focus
Indian stock markets turn volatile as crude oil crosses $116 per barrel and Nifty hovers around 23,000. Investors watch key support levels, Bank Nifty movement and Reliance Industries and Jio Platforms' Q2 results.
The Nifty 50 gained around 50 points at the opening, moving close to the 23,000 mark, while the Sensex advanced slightly more than 100 points to trade around 74,500. However, the Bank Nifty came under pressure, declining by more than 200 points. Market volatility intensified as the Sensex and Nifty moved between positive and negative territory.
According to market experts, rising crude oil prices are creating additional challenges for equities and limiting the scope for a sustained rally. Sharp selling in global technology stocks and a surge in international oil prices have kept market sentiment under pressure. However, buying by domestic institutional investors provided some support and helped prevent a sharper decline.
Brent crude prices crossed 6 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude moved above 3 per barrel. The surge came amid concerns over potential supply disruptions following attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on Saudi Arabia's oil facilities.
Geopolitical uncertainty has also increased amid reports suggesting that the United States could resume military strikes against Iran after the November 3 midterm elections. Meanwhile, US benchmark indices, including the Nasdaq and Dow Jones, closed lower overnight.
Although foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have reduced their selling activity in recent days and have made occasional purchases, prevailing market conditions do not appear favourable for a sustained upward movement.
The 23,000 mark remains the most critical level for the Nifty. If the index manages to hold firmly above this level, the next potential targets could be between 23,200 and 23,250. On the downside, the 22,650–22,700 range is expected to act as an important support zone.
For the Nifty to maintain gains on a weekly basis, it needs to close above 22,600. Consequently, investors will closely monitor the market's closing levels on the final trading day of the week.
The Bank Nifty had ended Thursday's session near its day's highest level, a development considered a positive signal for the broader market. The 55,000 mark remains a crucial level for the banking index. A sustained move above this level could pave the way towards 55,500, while support is seen around 54,500.
If the Bank Nifty manages to sustain itself above the 54,500 support level, overall market strength could remain intact. Its movement around these crucial technical levels will be closely watched by traders during the session.
Corporate earnings are also expected to play an important role in determining the market's direction. Reliance Industries and Jio Platforms are scheduled to announce their second-quarter results today, with investors awaiting the financial performance of both companies.
The companies' quarterly numbers and management commentary could influence stock market movements in the next trading session. Investors will closely track how their shares react following the earnings announcements. However, the day's biggest earnings announcements are scheduled to come after the market closes, making the final trading session particularly important for investors assessing the next market direction.
